Recently, the Penang State Police conducted a drug raid at a nightclub, arresting over 70 individuals, both men and women, and taking them to the police station for urine testing. Among those detained was a local female internet celebrity with a following of 800,000 fans.
What are the consequences of drug abuse in Malaysia?
Under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952:
Any person found guilty of drug abuse, drug addiction, or having drugs in their system
Can be fined up to RM 5,000 or imprisoned for up to 2 years, and subject to an observation period of not more than 3 years.
Are the penalties more severe for repeat offenders?
Yes.
Under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952:
Any person charged with a second drug offense or drug usage.
Can be sentenced to imprisonment for not less than 5 years or not more than 7 years and receive up to 3 strokes of the cane.
