Recently, a man shared a video on social media where he discovered maggots crawling inside cooked chicken at a restaurant. Other diners were shocked to find maggots in their fried chicken as well.
What can be done about an unsanitary restaurant?
1. You can file a complaint with your local government or Majlis through phone or email.
2. As a consumer, you can also file a complaint with the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC).
What consequences might the restaurant face?
1. Section 4 of the Malaysia Food Act 1983:
health officials can conduct surprise inspections, take relevant samples for investigation, or confiscate food.
2. Section 10 of the Malaysia Food Act 1983:
health officials can order the restaurant to clean up within a specific time frame. Failure to comply may result in fines or imprisonment for up to 5 years.
3. Section 11 of the Malaysia Food Act 1983:
health officials can order the restaurant to close for up to 14 days. Failure to comply may result in fines or imprisonment for up to 5 years.
Will the restaurant manager be fined as well?
Section 33A of the Malaysia Food Act 1983:
the manager is legally responsible unless they can prove that they had no knowledge of the issue or that the employee acted without their knowledge.
